About Teeth Whitening FAQs

General Teeth Whitening

What are the causes of teeth yellowing, staining and discoloration?
A.
Teeth tend to yellow with age. Genetics can also play a role in color and discoloration, which can vary from individual to individual. Tobacco, coffee, tea, cola, red wine, and eating certain foods such as dark colored berries can stain teeth as well. Stains and discoloration can be also be caused by certain prescription medications such as tetracycline, trauma to the teeth, and from plaque and tartar accumulation.
What are the methods of teeth whitening available?
A.
Today there are many methods of teeth whitening available for individuals. They tend to vary based on several considerations such as bleaching agent/formulation, delivery methods, treatment time and cost.[See Methods of Teeth Whitening]
What are the differences between the whitening products found in supermarkets and drugstores compared to other products and methods available?
A.
Supermarket/Drugstore Products

Products commonly found in supermarkets and drugstores generally contain less effective whitening agents and/or lower strength Hydrogen Peroxide based formulations (3-6%). These types of products are less effective and depending upon the product, treatment time usually involves one to two treatments per day, and range from several minutes to 6-8 hours overnight, taking up to two weeks to see results. Whitening may not also last as long with some of these products. Costs range from $3 - $8 for toothpastes and rinses to $8 - $30 for various bleaching formulations and delivery methods.

Professional Strength Take-Home/At-Home Bleaching

Many dentists recommend professional strength bleaching formulations, often Carbamide Peroxide (10%, 16%, and 22%) or Hydrogen Peroxide (6-10%) for at-home bleaching. This usually involves a custom-fitted tray in which a dental professional takes an impression of your teeth. This also usually includes a waiting period of up to 2 weeks until the trays are ready and another trip to the dentist's office. Treatments may range from 30 minutes to 6-8 hours overnight, once to twice a day and up to 5-10 days to see results. Costs for office visits including all bleaching materials can range from $300 - $600.

Laser Whitening

Laser or light therapy received via office visits to dental professionals usually require one to four treatments to achieve results. Professional strength bleaching gels are utilized in various high concentration peroxide-based formulas and special lasers or lights are used to accelerate the whitening process. These are treatments that require in-office visits and may take up to 4 treatments to achieve desired results. Laser or light therapy is also expensive, ranging from $600 - $1500.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are also available through dental professionals. With this method, porcelain veneers are bonded on to teeth. These can be used for not only whitening purposes, but cosmetic purposes as well by reshaping teeth. Veneers are the most expensive method of whitening available, usually thousands of dollars for a set of teeth.

What's the best method of teeth whitening for me?
A.
As always, it is recommended that users of whitening products see their dental professional on a regular basis for checkups and discuss the use of any whitening products with their dentist. He or she can discuss a method that can best meet your needs and considerations.
What is the difference between Carbamide Peroxide and Hydrogen Peroxide?
A.

Both Carbamide Peroxide and Hydrogen Peroxide are two known effective bleaching ingredients. Formulas containing Carbamide Peroxide are commonly used by dentists in strengths of 10%, 16% and 22%, while Hydrogen Peroxide is commonly used in strengths of 3%, 6%, 8% and 10%. Generally, the higher the strength of the formulation, the faster whitening results are achieved, and the wear times for each application are shortened. However, depending upon the formulation, formulas containing higher strength bleaching ingredients may also increase the chance of temporary sensitivity of teeth, gums and tissue. Temporary tooth sensitivity to hot or cold may also occur. These conditions are usually temporary and disappear within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing treatment.

Carbamide Peroxide is a bleaching agent of choice for Dental Professionals and has been supported by over a decade of research and use. Carbamide Peroxide is also known as Urea Peroxide. All whitening gels eventually break down into basic elements including water and oxygen. Carbamide Peroxide takes longer to break down than Hydrogen Peroxide and is therefore considered to be more stable and having a longer shelf life than Hydrogen Peroxide, increasing its efficacy.

Radiant Smile™ contains 22% Carbamide Peroxide in an exclusive gel formula that is optimized for the right balance of maximum whitening performance and buffered ph to reduce sensitivity.

Are there any side effects to teeth whitening?
A.

The most common side effect associated with teeth whitening is a temporary mild sensitivity of teeth and gums. This condition is usually temporary and disappears within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing treatment.

Temporary tooth sensitivity to hot or cold may also occur. Use of any product should be discontinued if pain or severe sensitivity develops in the teeth, gums or tissue and contact a dentist. Individuals allergic to peroxides should not use any peroxide-based product.

How long does it take to whiten my teeth and what are the costs?
A.

The length of time it takes to achieve whitening results will vary from individual to individual and is also based on other considerations such as bleaching agent/formulation and delivery method. Lower end products that are commonly found in supermarkets and drugstores cost between $8 - $30 for gel-based bleaching products; are generally less effective and take up to two weeks to achieve results.

At-home bleaching treatment received via office visits to dental professionals may take up to 5-10 days to achieve results based upon individual response to treatment and formulation used. These types of treatments generally cost $300 - $600. Laser or light therapy received via office visits to dental professionals usually require one to four treatments to achieve results. Laser or light therapy is also expensive, costing $600 - $1,500.

Bleaching Trays

What are Contour™ Bleaching Trays?
A.

Experts agree that the advantages of at-home professional teeth whitening systems over other methods include the use of a professional quality formula in combination with bleaching trays. The trays help to isolate and hold bleaching gel against teeth while at the same time they act as a barrier between your saliva and the gel. This helps to facilitate the teeth whitening process, minimize bleaching ingredient breakdown and also helps to protect your gums and tissue.

Our Contour™ Bleaching Trays are made of a special high quality EVA material, similar to the EVA material that is used to make custom-fitted trays in many dentist offices today. Our Contour™ Bleaching Trays, however, were developed so you can easily form comfortable, customized trays in minutes. All in the convenience of your own home and without all the mess! You also save $100 or more over what many dentists charge and avoid waiting up to two weeks for trays to be made. Easy to follow instructions and two Contour™ Bleaching Trays are included in your Radiant Smile™ Starter Kit.

Can I use Radiant Smile™ if I have my own bleaching trays?
A.

Yes. You can use Radiant Smile™ Professional Whitening Gel with your own bleaching trays. We offer convenient 2 - Pack, 4 - Pack & 6 - Pack refills which contain either 2, 4 & 6 Radiant Smile™ 3 ml Syringes and an easy to follow instruction guide. Please note that Radiant Smile™ Whitening Gel should not be used without bleaching trays. Avoid overfilling trays with gel. A small amount of Radiant Smile™ will deliver maximum whitening power.
